being very careful in small bars in the old town

(older)

Don't accept 'free' drinks bought by the bar person - they then charge you a small fortune for it (about ?50 for a weird Absinthe cocktail) and get the police onto you when you refuse to pay. The police then 'escort' you to a small cell where they basically beat you up until you pay. Beware Eastern...

U Modre Kachnicky (Blue Duckling)

(older)

Delightful restaurant for that special dinner. Specialises in duck and game dishes and does not forget vegetarians. Forget the offer of Czech sparkling wine as you enter and ask for tap water not bottled as these can add a big chunk to your bill. The decor, ambience and service are fabulous.

Cross Club

(older)

I'm not a big clubber but this place has to be seen to be believed. It's located in a rundown old tenement in the suburbs of Prague. When you arrive you're confronted with an entrance that looks like something out of a sci-fi movie - all shiny metal and whirling cogs. Inside some mad inventor has been at...

The novels of Paul Leppin

(older)

Leppin's "Blaugast" and Severin's "Journey into the dark" are the best books to accompany a journey to Prague. Both feature seedy, dubious characters wandering around the old town at the beginning of the 20th century. The books are thoroughly depraved, but very good indeed.

Night trams

(older)

Public transport in Prague is cheap and Plentiful. What's more is that it goes on throughout the night. Night trams have numbers in the 50s. One thing worth knowing is that all night trams go through Lazarska/Karlovo Namesti (Charles Square). So, if you know that tram 56 goes past your hotel you can jump on...

Kino Aero

(older)

Old fashioned cinema entered through a corridor running through communist-looking tenements and accessed through a courtyard. In summer you can buy beer from a little kiosk in the courtyard and sup it before your film. In winter there's a decent bar and you are allowed to take drinks into the auditorium with...

The Golden Wheel

(older)

Boutique bed and breakfast in Prague. If any European city goes out of its way to make the British feel welcome, in our experience, it has to be Prague. And the Golden Wheel, despite being sleek, stylish and thoroughly modern, has an extremely welcoming atmosphere. All members of the hotel staff were helpful...

Pension Vysehrad

(older)

Prague apartments for groups over hotels

(older)

Prague may be a cheap city for most Europeans but I've found that hotels in central Prague are not the best value. However, for 18€ per night our travel group of 6 stayed in a lovely Prague townhouse, a rental apartment from waytostay.comBeing able to come and go as we pleased came in very handy for our...

Prague Fleamarket

(older)

Prague's only real fleamarket 'Bleší trh' happens every Saturday morning in Kolbenova (beside Kolbenova metro). A huge sprawling outdoor market, you'll find broken electronics, piles of clothes, paintings, communist items, furniture, jugs, quirky souvenirs, jewellery, and the odd amazing antique find for a...

The Crypt of Prague’s Orthodox Cathedral of Saints Cyril and Methodius

(older)

One would be hard pressed to find a more moving film location than the crypt of Prague’s Orthodox Cathedral of Saints Cyril and Methodius that featured in the 1975 film 'Operation Daybreak' which was based on the true story assassination of SS Obergruppenfuhrer Reinhard Heydrich. In retaliation for...

Bila Vrana (White Crow)

(older)

Fantastic little cafe/restaurant/bar with great food at a reasonable price in a lovely part of the city. The staff are friendly (often a rarity in Prague) and and the beer is good. They have a select lunch menu deal as they are usually quite packed during the lunch rush. One of my favourite places when I...

Vinicni Altan winery

(older)

While Prague is overwhelmingly known for its beer halls and charming pubs, the city also bears testament to the Czech Republic's burgeoning wine culture. One of my favorite places is the Vinicni Altan winery, an intricately trellised wine bar and terrace hidden in the Havlickovy sady park and adjacent to the...

Czech Inn

(older)

I liked this modern boutique hostel for the great private rooms. Some friends stayed in the dorms and they were nice too. Super design and fun atmosphere. The staff were really nice and helpful with all the questions I had.

The Castle Steps Hotel Prague

(older)

I saw short reviews of this hotel around up in the charts for best value for money, as I like to scour for hidden gems. I was not disappointed. It is situated under the castle exactly in the centre but with great prices. The staff were excellent and very informal and relaxed but still willing to pander to...

Praha Expert's prague apartments

(older)

Just came back home after staying in one of Praha Expert's holiday apartments. Everything was exactly as promised, the airport transfer was on time and the driver very friendly. I even got help directly from the owner of the company, when I wasn't able to make "my" washing machine work - which was because I...

The Castle Steps Hotel

(older)

First and foremost, this hotel is in a great location in a great city. Prague is rather compact and as the name suggests, it is near Prague Castle. Everywhere of interest is reachable by foot and we didn't use any public transport. The room we got at the hotel was spacious and got a great deal of light,...

Rentego

(older)

Rentego let out small and large apartments around Prague for visitors. We stayed in one of their smallest (Mala) and had a lovely time. It was modest but clean and tidy and had everything we needed for a good, self-catered holiday. When you're hardly in your room anyway, there really is no point blowing out...

Hostel Downtown

(older)

Newly opened, this hostel was a great bargain. Right smack in the middle of the city, it was less than a five minute walk to Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square.
